The Faggot

The Faggot was made as a part of a group show curated by Kit Bollag-Miller at Denver Art Museum. The show involved queering medieval myths - in this case, looking at one popular folk etymology in the queer community of how the word “faggot” came to be used as a slur. In this medieval folk narrative, a “faggot” was the term used to describe a bundle of sticks. This bundle of sticks was used to burn witches and queers, which is how the term came to be regarded as a derogatory slur (ie death to the gays, witches, and femmes).

george, Kit, and I thought deeply about this use of the word faggot - the persecution of burning, the ability to mock being set on fire, and the transcendence of being burned at the stake, refusing to re-emerge into anything except deeper authenticity.

All this came to light in front of a 1000 person audience where george was the fire, and I was the faggot.

Creative Team includes george, stevie, and Kit Bollag-Miller.
